This page is a collection of transcriptions of the works, particularly the Sonatas/Suites of the great Baroque lute composer Sylvius Leopold Weiss for 10 or 11-string guitar (Alto-guitar).  My major reference of recording is Robert Barto's 8 volumes Weiss Sonatas on the Naxos label. I also use Barto's numberings of the Sonatas.

 * All the transcriptions are original and independent works, and they are not claimed to be scholarly.  Readers are encouraged to refer to other sources in this field.  ** Fingerings are only suggestive. Readers are welcome to try other options.

Sonatas/Works: Titles: PDF MIDI Comment:
Sonata No. 2 Prelude This is a magnificent Sonata ! The Prelude is expressive and improvisational; the Allemande is stately; the Courante is brilliant, the Bourrée is humorous; the Sarabande is introspective and beautiful; the Menuet is brief and the Gigue is vivid.

Ten-string guitarist Narciso Yepes had transcribed and recorded this Sonata in E. So in this Edition, I also transcribed it to E major for 10-string guitar in Yepes-style tuninig* (re-entrant G#/F# on 9th/10th string).  Only 10 or 11-string guitar will do full justice to this work.

* Yepes Tuning: e'-b-g-d-A-E-B'-A#-G#-F#

Sonata No. 35 Allemande (Adagio) Absolutely masterful ! Originally in D minor now transcribed to B minor for 11-string guitar. The sonority of the minor key is incredible, and can only be realized by a multi-string guitar.

This work and the above Sonata No. 2 are in Volume 3 of the Robert Barto's Naxos Weiss collection (8.554350). Definitely recommended for a good listening.  And don't miss Tim Crawford's  informative liner notes about these Sonatas.

Sonata No. 27 Allemande This is also in Volume 3 of Robert Barto's Naxos Weiss collection. In contrast to Sonata No. 35, this one in in lighter mood. However it is equally enjoyable, and fits well on the 11-string Alto-guitar.

Sonata No. 50 Introduzzione This is also in Volume 2 of Robert Barto's Naxos Weiss collection (8.553988).

This is a late Weiss work in grand, imposing scale, and it's simply Weiss at his best.

Sonata No. 11 Fantasia Sonatas 11, 49 and 42 are includede in Volume 1 of Robert Barto's Naxos Weiss collection (8.553773).

Here again, Weiss showed how consummate he was as a lute composer and player. As always, in each Sonata there is diversity from the slow, singing catabiles to the vivid and flamboyant dances. Everything is full of energy and wit.

The Fantasia in Sonata No. 11 had appeared elsewhere as Prelude. It has been played and recorded by guitarists in D minor. In this 11-string guitar version, it is transposed to B minor, which will really produce a rich and deep resonance sound.

Sonata No. 38 Prelude Sonatas 38, 43 and the less heard  Tombeau sur la mort de M. Cajetan Baron D'Hartig are includede in Volume 5 of Robert Barto's Naxos Weiss collection (8.554833).

The Sonatas are full of delightful movements. Each Sonata finishes with a sparkling Presto to show off the virtuosity of Weiss. The bold, innovative composition skills of Weiss are also reflected in shifting moods in some of the movements

Tombeau sur la mort de M. Cajetan Baron D'Hartig  is less famous and heard than the other one for Logy. It does have six-string guitar version. Nevertheless it seems to have languished in guitarists' repertoire.
