There are many fascinating pieces from the 17th century Scottish lute manuscripts.
They are full of rich Scottish flavors, quite distinct from English, German or Italian
music. Some of the manuscripts (e.g. Balcarres) were for
11-course Baroque lute in d minor tuning. Many of these pieces are very suitable for altoguitar.
The 17th century Scottish lute players probably took lessons from neighboring
French masters such as Gaultier and Gallot, so the works of these
French masters were among Scott's favorites, and many were included in the
Scottish lute manuscripts.
I have selected
pieces from Jakob Lindberg's excellent CD: Lute Music from Scotland and
France (BIS label) and transcribed them for altoguitar (sources:
intabulations by Wayne Cripps and Richard Civiol). These
attractive pieces
are not difficult, and I hope they will become valuable additions to guitarists' repertoire.
The playing and interpretation of Scottish lute music by
those leading artists in this field, such as Jakob Lindberg, Ronn Mcfarlane
and Rob MacKillop, are highly recommended listening.

* All
the transcriptions are my original and independent works. My goal is to promote neglected music and
multi-string guitars, and I don't claim to be scholarly, and I added editorial
changes when I felt necessary. Readers are
encouraged to refer to other sources in this field. Comments and
suggestions are welcomed.
